A TEMPLE OF SCENIC LIFE FOR THESPIANS, THEATRE-FOLKS, AND TRAVELLERS
The Beacon is a proposed hotel, public pool and bathhouse facility located at 178 Market Avenue, Winnipeg.
The site of the edifice is part of the historical Exchange District of Downtown Winnipeg.
The character of the proposed building would emulate the intimate and delicate character of the MTC Theatre Centre, a building adjacent to the site. Similarly, the acts and arts of dwelling would be framed in the facade and interior spaces of the edifice reflecting the phenomena offered by the Exchange District where the city becomes a proscenium of the acts and arts of dwelling. A pilgrimage or journey would also lead into the various spaces of desire in the hotel and bathhouse. Lighting and light installations would guide the people in navigating through the spaces and in reaching their destinations.
The society of rooms would also create scenarios that can reify and blur the boundaries between the actors, people performing in space, and the viewer, the onlookers. The edifice reexamines the privilege of the view through echoing the realms of divinity defined by thresholds in Renaissance paintings, and by referencing themes of Voyeurism vs. Exhibitionism. Moreover more public spaces would happen around the street level and the adjacent levels to it. The pool located on the subterranean level would echo the depth of the lowered stage of the MTC Theatre Centre.
