EPISODE ONE: "ORPHEUS"

Episode one reveals how the subterranean level of the hotel celebrates the arts and acts of bathing.

Bathing is shown as a transformative act of cleansing both physically and spiritually. Episode one recalls the mythical dreams of Orpheus looking for his other self in the form of Eurydice in the underworld, of the flood story that cleansed the earth, of Venus being born above the water, of Jesus being baptized on the waters of the Jordan river, and of vapours coming out from the crevices of the rocks informing the prophecies of an oracle.  The baths allude as well to the mythical river that once connected the old Winnipeg market to the river that was said to be once present to where the hotel is sited now.

ORPHEUS

Orpheus, the conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, was invited by Hades, the manager of the hotel to enchant the guest at the lobby with his music. Orpheus agreed with the promise of a free stay at the hotel for him and his wife, Eurydice, to enjoy the subterranean spa.

Eurydice began exploring the depths of the hotel while Orpheus was performing. After Orpheus’ performance he began searching for his wife at the bath and pool facilities of the hotel.

Orpheus heard Eurydice’s voice by the Sunken Nave of the bathhouse. He looked back and he saw Eurydice just coming out of the Tabernacle but the steam began to rise and shrouded the hall with mist. Eurydice slowly disappeared amidst the sea of fog.
